  Description
Have you noticed that when you set an offset on your Haas lathe then when the tool actually cuts the job the work piece is over or undersize?
This is an easy fix that lots of people just seem to live with.
The procedure for recalibrating your tool eye is as follows:
  1. Ensure the tool eye clocks up square, before carrying on with this procedure make sure the tool eye is as square as possible.
  2. nstall a turning tool into the turret (OD tool is easiest).
  3. Put a piece of material that you can take a manual cut on into the chuck.
  4. Manually start up the spindle and wind the tool down in X to a diameter that will cut and then use the Z axis only to wind Z- then Z+ to take a cut. Note when you cut material and are happy with the cut don’t move the X axis.
  5. Stop the spindle and measure the diameter of the material you have just cut without moving the X axis.
  6. Whilst still in Hand Jog mode make sure you are on the tool offset page and have the X axis column highlighted on the tool which is being used and press the X diameter measure key, it will ask you to enter diameter. Type the diameter you just measured and press Write/Enter.
  7. Write down the value that is now filled into the tool geometry for that tool.
  8. Go to settings by pressing the setting Graph key, type number 59 and cursor down, this will take you to setting 59 (X+ probe offset).
  9. Set settings 59 to 63 to zero.
  10. Now use your probe to calibrate or set the same tool as you just set in the X axis only and this will overwrite the value you should of written down.
  11. Once you have a value again in the tool offset, subtract the written down value in the offset page from the one currently in the offset page, this should leave a positive value.
  12. Type this into setting 59.
  13. Using a micrometer measure the carbide tool eye, times this figure by 2 and subtract this from the value in setting 59, type the new value into setting 60.
  14. Enter a zero into setting 61.
  15. Enter the value you measured the tool eye as (e.g. 9.998) as a positive number into setting 62.
  16. And enter the same value in setting 63.
  17. Once this is done you should achieve the same value by setting the tool manually or with the probe.
