SPECIALIST construction and regeneration firm Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) was helping build careers for the future when they led practical sessions teaching young people to build flat pack kitchens.
Flat packs may test even the most competent DIYers…but hundreds of school pupils from the Kirkby-in-Ashfield area of Nottinghamshire were given the chance of trying out joinery skills by specialist construction and regeneration firm (FHM) at a careers event. Pupils were tasked with building kitchen units and cupboards from flat packs – with some assistance from FHM joiners. Jan Hodgett, FHM’s training and development manager, said: “We thought it would be a brilliant idea to get the young people to try something practical like building kitchen base and wall units. They really got stuck in to the practical sessions. “We wanted to have practical sessions to raise pupils’ awareness about the construction industry and the sorts of jobs available to people when they leave school. “Pupils from several schools had a go at the kitchen unit task – and both girls and boys had fun at having a go.” FHM, which is working with Ashfield Homes on maintenance and repairs on its properties across the area, had a joiner and apprentice joiner on hand to assist the junior ‘flat packers’. The practical sessions were part of the Ambitious in Ashfield 2011 event at Festival Hall Leisure Centre organised by Ashfield Council when local employers, schools and colleges will get together to promote careers to young people. |
