...TO SUPPORT PCW TECHNOLOGY’S IMPRESSIVE GROWTH
PCW Technology in Southampton are yet another fine example of the enterprise of a few individuals who formed a new company as a spin-off from a previous employer – in their case, Rittal, one of the world’s leaders in electronic packaging systems.
In common with many global manufacturers Rittal consolidated their UK operations, closing down their local plant, which presented an opportunity to Marc Prewitt, Ian Cull and Mike Webb to establish PCW as their major subcontractor supplying front panels and sub-racks.
With over 50 years joint experience behind them, PCW initially provided a seamless aluminium machining service to Rittal using already existing equipment which included a vital and proven DATRON M3 machining centre. Custom machining on front panels provides cut-outs for connectors, LEDs, switches, meters – any shape and size of aperture – and even engraves logos and legends into the metal.
From then on the business has grown appreciably, so much so that they bought a new DATRON M75 Machining Centre just before Christmas last year.
“We had won new substantial new business from other customers than Rittal and needed to increase our capacity quickly,” explained PCW’s M.D., Marc Prewitt. “The reliability of Datron machines was proven as the M3 is over 13 years old, so our decision was an easy one!”
“Not only did DATRON pull out all the stops to provide a machine at short notice – taking a stock machine out of their showroom - but they also put together a finance package that was highly attractive to us.”
The M75 is built around DATRON’s trademark granite table – offering the highest precision, stability and robustness – and is equipped with a 1.2Kw spindle capable of operating up to speeds of 30,000 rpm. The impressive 520 x 650 x 240 mm worktable is set within an exceptionally small 1300 mm square machine footprint. A 10-position self-tool changer with tool length sensor completes the full package of the M75.
Delivering the important benefits of faster machining time, greater accuracy, superior quality and finish, quicker set-up, less vibration because of the granite base, lower operating noise levels, longer tool life, smarter and easier programing (including interchangeability between the two machines) - the M75 has helped PCW take an important and positive step in their future business plan.
“The investment in this new machine and DATRON tooling has quickly paid off by helping us win new business, especially as we can now turn around samples much quicker than before. Cycle times have at least halved with the M75 compared with the M3,” said Marc. “It also allows us to hit more customers’ deadlines easier, with J-I-T batch call-offs the norm in delivery scheduling.”
PCW have made a substantial investment for the future and the purchase of another DATRON machine with a bigger base is on the cards before the end of the year. PCW and their customers are reaping the benefits of this all-round success story, which is destined to continue at an even faster pace with the help of a sharper cutting edge form DATRON! |
