Six new ranges of Dormer cutters are made from High Speed Steel-XS1, a powder metallurgy steel with toughness properties better able to withstand the shock load and intermittent cutting associated with milling operations.
The new material performs at speeds and feeds normally associated with HSCo cutters. Their bronze finish is able to provide a uniform structure and hardness at the tool surface.
This material/this finish applies to C191, C192, C291, C292, C391, C392.
As a guideline, the following cutters are used for the following operations:-
- C191/C192: 2 flute cutters For slotting and milling keyways
- C291/C292: 3 flute cutters For profile milling and producing open slots
- C391/C392: Multi-flute cutters For slotting and milling keyways
- C145: 2 straight fluted cutter For milling keyways and slots with P9 tolerance in one cut. To resist "slot lean"
- C530/C535: Ball-nosed cutters For radius slot milling, fillets, die sinking and profile milling
British standard cutters' overall and cut lengths are different from DIN and ISO standards (short, medium, long and extra long).

For maximum productivity, greater tool life and accuracy, careful cutter selection and the use of correct feeds and speeds is essential.
