High Performance inserted disc mill for 1.4 mm slots:
A high performance wafer-thin disc-type milling cutter which utilises a unique insert clamping method has been introduced by Horn.
The Type M139 cutter has an overall diameter of 100 mm or 80 mm. The larger cutter has ten single edged carbide inserts and is capable of generating grooves as narrow as 1.4 mm wide to a depth of 25 mm. The 80 mm cutter has eight inserts and can machine to a depth of 20 mm.
This capability has hitherto been approached only with carbide tipped slitting saws; these have restricted life due to the inability to re-sharpen.
Initially, insert widths of 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 mm are available, all of which are compatible with the standard cutter body. Additional cutting widths and specific geometries - including full radius inserts - will follow
The key feature of Horn Type M139 is the self clamping insert location. The ‘comma’ shaped insert has a V profiled periphery which aligns it within a correspondingly profiled open sided location in the disc-type steel holder. A hand-held key is used to twist the insert into the pocket which locates it securely when static.
The shape of the insert/pocket interface is such that the insert clamping force increases under centrifugal force when spinning in free air and under cutting load. However the design allows easy removal for in-situ insert exchange using the installation key
